WHAT IT IS

In plain English.

Generative engine optimization applies the same foundations to generative AI search experiences such as Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Copilot and Gemini.

Example (illustrative, not a customer): A bakery whose page states its location, hours and what it makes in plain text is easier for any system to describe accurately than one whose key details sit only in an image. Clear text content on indexed pages is the foundation either way.

HOW IT WORKS

The pieces.

Google states there are no additional requirements, no special markup and no “AI text files” needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and normal SEO best practices apply.
Allow crawling, keep text content available, offer a good page experience, and make structured data match visible content.
Other AI systems use their own methods and do not guarantee citations.

WHAT IS MEASURABLE

What you can check.

Google Search Console shows impressions, clicks, queries and indexing status, where you grant access.
Technical checks and structured-data validation show whether pages are crawlable and well-formed.
Spot-checks of AI answers are point-in-time observations, not reproducible rankings.

LIMITS

What no one can promise.

No one can promise a specific number of AI citations.
There is no “AI ranking position” to measure or promise.
Each AI system decides what it shows.
